12 years later, Brady Corbet’s first film will finally be released in France
Before The Brutalist, which won 3 Oscars, the American director had signed a first feature film with Robert Pattinson. Twelve years after its presentation in Venice, The Childhood of a Chef will finally hit French theaters in 2027.
It’s a film that we thought we’d never see in France.
Honored at the Venice Film Festival in 2015 – he won the Prize for Best First Work – The Childhood of a ChefBrady Corbet’s first feature film, has until now never benefited from a French release. After the success of The Brutalistawarded three Oscars last year, distributor Condor Films has finally decided to repair this anomaly.
The film will first be previewed during the 52nd Deauville American Film Festival, which will be held from September 4 to 13, 2026, before a release in French theaters planned for 2027. No specific date has yet been announced.

Adapted from the eponymous short story by Jean-Paul Sartre, published in 1939, The Childhood of a Chef tells the story of the childhood and adolescence of Lucien Fleurier, a young boy whose entourage emphasizes his beauty and gentleness from an early age. Over the years, he searches for his place, his identity and ends up understanding that he is destined to become a “leader”.
For his first film, Brady Corbet brought together a particularly prestigious cast. Bérénice Bejo and Liam Cunningham play the parents of Lucien, played as a child by Tom Sweet, while the young Robert Pattinson played an ambiguous friend of the family…
The Childhood of a Chef was entitled to a limited release in North America in 2016, but did not reach us.
This re-release will therefore allow us to rediscover the beginnings of a filmmaker who has become essential, while Brady Corbet is already preparing his next film which will be a horror western, The Origin of the Worldwith Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, and Selena Gomez.
