Moana, the legend at the end of the world: a sanitized live-action version (review)

Moana en live takes the lead at the French box office, but…

The live-action Disney remake is off to a solid start, but significantly lower than the animated classic released in 2016.

Moana takes off, but remains far from the tidal wave of 2016.

Unsurprisingly, the live remake of Vaiana, the legend of the end of the world dominates the French box office. This new version of the Disney classic attracted 740,000 spectators for its first week of operation and moved to the top of the rankings.

A convincing launch, but which remains well behind the 2016 phenomenon. At the same stage, the original animated film had already attracted 1.2 million spectators, almost twice as many.

Behind Disney, summer animated films continue to perform very well despite attendance down around 20%.

Toy Story 5 still attracts more than 500,000 spectators to its immense park of 1,239 rooms. After four weeks, the new Pixar has 3.2 million admissions. An impressive performance, even if it remains below Toy Story 4which already totaled 4 million spectators at the same stadium in 2019.

Same trend for Minions 3. The Illumination film adds 430,000 admissions in a thousand theaters and is now approaching 2 million spectators after three weeks. Here again, the pace is a little less sustained than that of Minions 2which already peaked at 2.5 million admissions at the same time in 2022.

The other great performance of the week is to the credit of The Battle of Gaullewhich now looks great by crossing the milestone of 3 million cumulative entries. The historic diptych thus confirms its status as a great French popular success, with around 1 million spectators for I write your name and 2 million for The Iron Age.

Shy start on the other hand for Evil Dead Burn. The new opus of the horrific saga, directed by Frenchman Sébastien Vaniček, only starts in 7th place with 130,000 spectators in just over 300 theaters. A disappointing result for the franchise, much lower than that of Evil Dead Rise. In 2023, Lee Cronin’s film attracted 300,000 spectators in its first week.

The fall continues for Supergirl.

As in the United States, Clark Kent’s cousin is struggling to convince the French public. For its second week, the space opera from Warner Bros. brings together just over 115,000 spectators in nearly 600 theaters, a drop in attendance of 54%. Its total remains less than 400,000 entries, very far from the performance of Supermanwhich was already approaching a million spectators at the same stadium last summer.

Finally, note the release of Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affairwhich attracts just over 20,000 spectators in 150 theaters, a nice score for this full version highly anticipated by Quentin Tarantino fans.
