The Riverdale universe will be reborn with a new Disney+ series

Disney has ordered a new Archie series from the creators of Riverdale. And this time, it’s time for zombies.

The Riverdale universe is preparing to make its comeback. Disney+ has officially ordered Afterlife With Archie, a new series adapted from the famous Archie comics, which will find several of the artisans of Riverdale behind the camera.

The project will adapt the mini-series of comics imagined by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla, published from 2013. But this time, Archie’s adventures take a radical turn: direction an alternative reality plunged into the middle of a zombie apocalypse. The official synopsis sets the tone:

“When a spell cast by a famous teenage witch goes awry, an army of possessed dead invades Riverdale. Archie and his friends will have to fight to survive, testing the friendships, romances and bonds that have united them forever.”

A much more horrific plot than that of Riverdale, even if the series promises to maintain the importance of the relationships between its characters.

The project is written and produced by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, already showrunner of Riverdale, who also finds Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, Jon Goldwater and Jimmy Gibbons in production. “We are thrilled to have Roberto back for this exciting series that takes us back to the Riverdale universe we love so much,” said Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter.

For Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, Afterlife With Archie remains faithful to the spirit of the franchise despite its horror orientation:

“Afterlife With Archie is about more than just zombies. It’s a story about friendship, loyalty, and humanity, everything that makes Riverdale worth fighting for. Fans will love this new take on the gang…and maybe they’ll let out a few screams, too.”

Afterlife With Archie is expected on Disney+ in fall 2027, with a release planned around Halloween.
