Is The Odyssey Nolan's masterpiece? (critical)

The Odyssey and Spider-Man Brand New Day become the kings of the 2026 box office in France

With 6.4 million admissions, The Odyssey takes the lead in the 2026 French box office, but should be overtaken in the coming days by Brand New Day, which has already reached 6.25 million. The two summer phenomena have overtaken Marsupilami, until then number 1 of the year.

The duel between the two summer behemoths continues to spark. The Odyssey now stands at 6.4 million admissions and becomes the new number 1 at the French box office in 2026. But his reign should be very short-lived: Spider-Man: Brand New Daystill in the lead this week, added another 1.1 million spectators and reached 6.252 million admissions.

Christopher Nolan’s film should therefore be overtaken in the coming days by the Marvel blockbuster. Both films have already done better than Marsupilamiwhich until now occupied first place in the annual ranking with just over 6 million spectators.

After three weeks, Spider-Man: Brand New Day above all displays the third best post-Covid accumulation in France, behind the last two parts of the saga Avatar. A performance which confirms the scale of the phenomenon surrounding the return of Tom Holland in the costume of Peter Parker.

For comparison, Spider-Man: No Way Home attracted a little over a million spectators during its third week, for a total of 5.6 million admissions. With 6.252 million after just three weeks, Brand New Day therefore has a considerable lead over its predecessor.

The new section can therefore very seriously consider exceeding 7.3 million entries of No Way Home and, at the same time, become the biggest Marvel success in history in France

French cinema also continues to do very well. The diptych The Battle of Gaulle: I write your name And The Battle of Gaulle: The Iron Age now has nearly 5 million admissions, confirming the excellent performance of the two historic films.

Another great French performance, From the Comédie-Françaiseworn in particular by Pauline Clément, is now approaching a million spectators.

Among the new releases, the tricolor comedy Fallen from the sky marks the best start with nearly 600,000 admissions, including previews, for its first week. A solid launch which allows comedian Ilyes Djadel to do better than The End of Oak Street. The blockbuster starring Anne Hathaway and her dinosaurs only attracted 330,000 spectators for its first week in French cinemas, a very average start for the last big Hollywood production of the summer.

Finally, we can note that, a few weeks after her Cannes coronation, Virginie Efira attracted nearly 90,000 spectators with Suddenly, previews included. This is the new film by the Japanese director, whose best result in France remains Drive My Carwith 222,000 entries in 2021.
