Box office: Spider-Man climbs again, Ridley Scott collapses with The Dog Stars

The Weaver is still at the top of the US box office and is approaching 900 million in North America. Meanwhile, Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic drama only rakes in $8 million.

The phenomenon Spider-Man: Brand New Day does not weaken. For its fifth weekend, the Marvel blockbuster remains well at the top of the American box office with an additional $22 million in 3,678 theaters.

Destin Daniel Cretton’s film is now close to $900 million in North America and is preparing to set a new historic record. With only a few million to go, Brand New Day will in fact exceed the 936 million dollars of Star Wars: The Force Awakensreleased in 2015, and become the biggest success of all time at the North American box office.

A spectacular new milestone for Tom Holland’s fourth Spider-Man, which has already crossed $2 billion worldwide. With now $2.3 billion at the worldwide box office, the film has also just surpassed Ne Zha 2which finished at 2.27 billion, to become the fourth biggest success in the history of world cinema.

And the next obstacle is already in sight: Avatar: The Way of Waterwhich had accumulated 2.334 billion dollars. At the current rate, Brand New Day should be able to surpass it and end its career as the third biggest film of all time, behind the two juggernauts Avatar And Avengers: Endgame.

While Spider-Man is collecting records, it’s a completely different story for Ridley Scott.

The Dog Starshis new film with Jacob Elordi, is off to a particularly worrying start with only $8 million for its first weekend across the Atlantic, in fifth place in the rankings.

For a film whose production budget would be around 80 to 100 million dollars, the result already looks like a small industrial disaster. Despite its casting and the presence of Jacob Elordi, the public clearly did not respond. Women under 25, although likely to constitute a significant part of Elordi’s audience, represent only 6% of spectators, according to Deadline.

In Ridley Scott’s career, there have already been complicated starts. The Dog Stars begins at approximately the same level as Cartelin 2013. Despite the presence of Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Penélope Cruz and Michael Fassbender, the film opened to only $7.8 million before ending its American career at 17 million and under 80 million worldwide.

It therefore seems very unlikely that Dog Stars reaches $100 million at the global box office in the long term and should therefore cost Disney-owned studio 20th Century Studios dearly.

The US box office surprise today comes from Coyote vs. Acmethe old project abandoned by Warner Bros. which finally returns to theaters and will take third place with almost 14 million dollars. The film notably benefits from excellent reviews across the Atlantic, which could allow it to benefit from good word of mouth and a longer career than expected.

For his part, The Odyssey continues to hold up remarkably well. Christopher Nolan’s film should collect around $15 million for its American weekend, once again confirming its exceptional performance.

The blockbuster is now approaching $1.5 billion in global revenue and continues to climb the all-time rankings. The Odyssey should soon exceed Avatar: Of Fire and Ashes (2025) and Top Gun: Maverick (2022) to enter the Top 15 of all time.
