What launch for Les Misérables at the French box office?
Fred Cavayé’s adaptation does almost as much as The Three Musketeers but much less than The Count of Monte Cristo.
This is one of the big French cinema releases this year.
Les Miserables takes the lead in new releases of the week, with more than 38,000 tickets sold in 661 theaters this Wednesday. Fred Cavayé’s adaptation has received more than 73,000 entries, half of which come from previews. Classic for a big budget French adaptation of this genre. For comparison, The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan had accumulated 197,000 admissions after the first day in theaters, largely boosted by its 121,000 admissions in AVP. The Three Musketeers: Milady had 150,000 spectators on the first day, thanks to 75,000 AVP too. The two films finished above 3 and 2 million admissions respectively.
It will also be noted that The Count of Monte Cristo had a first day of 125,000 admissions (including 11,978 in previews) from its first day in theaters in France in June 2024, to end its career at over 9 million.
So this is a good start for Les Miserablesbut below recent French hits of the genre.
Far behind, the horror film Evil has more than 37,000 spectators (including AVP) in 264 cinemas in France. It still displays the best average in the ranking, with 87 spectators per room.
The film starring Jessica Chastain has the luxury of doing better than Street Fighter. Kitao Sakura’s adaptation of the video game attracted 25,000 spectators in 355 theaters (with AVP), an average of 51 admissions per copy.
Behind, in fifth position in the ranking, The corset was seen this Wednesday by more than 11,000 animation fans. But Louis Clichy’s film has had a lot of previews and has already officially received more than 50,000 admissions.
Finally, small score for Minotaur. The film by Russian director Andreï Zviaguintsev, awarded at Cannes and which will represent France at the next Oscars, attracted fewer than 10,000 curious people in 200 theaters across France. It is only in 7th place and has 22,000 entries with previews.
