Les Miserables takes the lead at the box office, but it’s not yet a success

The new adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel has not yet achieved its objectives.

With his ambitious rereading of Miserablesupported by an XXL cast (Vincent Lindon, Tahar Rahim, Camille Cottin, Benjamin Lavernhe…), StudioCanal was clearly hunting on the lands of Pathé and its recent adaptations of the great works of Alexandre Dumas: the diptych The Three Musketeers And The Count of Monte Cristo.

After a week in theaters, Fred Cavayé’s film does not yet compare to the French box office. Its weekly results are better than one might have feared after its timid first day, but with 445,000 spectators (480,000 previews included), it is clearly behind The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan And Milady (respectively 885,000 and 635,000 entries), and very far from Pierre Niney’s Monte-Cristo (nearly 1.2 million tickets).

Les Miserables can he hope for a recovery worthy of The Battle of Gaulle: The Iron Agewhich sold only 383,000 tickets for its first week before making an improbable comeback to exceed 3 million admissions? The film enjoys good audience ratings, but this scenario remains improbable. For the moment, this production at 34 million euros is not the expected success.

In the second week, Ducobu and the Ghost of Saint-Potache took full advantage of the school holidays to improve its score with 280,000 additional spectators for a total of over 500,000 entries. Elie Semoun’s film should exceed one million like all episodes of the franchise. Brad Pitt completes the podium with Heart of the Beast. After a month of operation, it is close to 1.4 million cinema admissions.

Among the other new features in the ranking, Evil with Jessica Chastain attracts 184,000 thrill-seekers and takes 5th place. Two very different animated films also stand out: Mochy (6th) and The Corset (9th), with 173,000 and 128,000 tickets sold respectively. Street Fighter comes in 7th position with 143,000 entries. THE Minotaur by Andreï Zviaguintsev remains on the outskirts of the top 10, despite his 82,000 tickets and a good average number of spectators per theater.

During this time, Our salvation crossed the barrier of 500,000 entries, consolidating its status as the most successful distributor Condor, while Madder closes the top 10 with 613,000 entries totaled in one month. Neither seen nor known On the other hand, it is difficult to find its audience. With 200,000 admissions in two weeks, the comedy with Isabelle Huppert as an extra seeking to break into the cinema is already relegated to 15th place…
