David Fincher had to cut Cliff Booth’s script: “There was enough to make two films”
Quentin Tarantino explains how the film is different from Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood, with a Jackie Brown flavor.
While Netflix revealed new exclusive images this week, David Fincher also does his share of promotion before the film’s release The New Misadventures of Cliff Booth in the pages of the magazine Empire with a duo interview with Quentin Tarantino, who entrusted him with the production of his screenplay on the stuntman of Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood.
We learn in particular that the film will last approximately 2 hours 20 minutes, and that there was initially material for much more.
“The first version I read was 230 pages. There was enough to make two films“, explains Fincher, who estimates he cut 60 pages while trying to find a compromise:
“There was somewhere in there a Venn diagram of what Brad wanted to do, what I wanted to do, and what Quentin wanted to do. Not ‘wanted to do,’ but the aspects we wanted to focus on.”
During the interview, Tarantino for his part discusses the nature of Cliff Boothand its difference with OUATIH :
“I don’t see it as an atmospheric film. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood was an atmospheric film, but you know you’re going to Cielo Drive (the site of the Manson Family murders). He has his strength, so he didn’t need much intrigue. It was a very different script.”
QT even quotes the author of Rum Punchthe novel he adapted on Jackie Brownto qualify The New Misadventures of Cliff Booth : “For me, it has the flavor of an Elmore Leonard book, a pocket thriller side“.
The New Misadventures of Cliff Booth will be released on Netflix on December 23. Trailer:
