Kingdom Hearts: the video game will be adapted into an animated series on Disney+

Sora and his inseparable Keyblade will soon leave consoles to join the streaming platform. The famous video game franchise will be adapted into an animated series, with the participation of its creator Tetsuya Nomura.

Almost a quarter of a century after its creation, Kingdom Hearts will become an animated series.

Disney+ and Disney Channel have ordered this new adaptation of the famous video game franchise, developed in partnership with Tetsuya Nomura and the Square Enix studio.

For the moment, very few details have been revealed about this new series, which still has the working title Kingdom Hearts. Disney, however, promises a new story that will expand the universe imagined by Nomura while rediscovering the characters who have attracted millions of players around the world.

A first image has been revealed and already allows us to find Sora, the hero of the saga, with his faithful Keyblade.

The involvement of Tetsuya Nomura should in any case allow the series to remain faithful to the spirit of the franchise.

Launched in 2002 on PlayStation 2, Kingdom Hearts has become one of Square Enix’s most popular licenses, thanks to its very particular mix between Disney characters, the Final Fantasy universe and Nomura’s original creations.

“Kingdom Hearts has captivated gamers around the world with its unique blend of adventure and imagination,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family. “There’s something really exciting about taking a world that fans have explored for years through games and bringing it to life in a whole new way.”

The series will join the catalog of new original animated productions developed for Disney+, alongside Messi and the Giants, Warrior Cats and Journey.

As of yet, no release date or voice casting details have been announced.
