Spider-Man: Brand New Day becomes 3rd biggest hit of all time

Only Avengers: Endgame and Avatar have done better than Brand New Day in cinema history.

Sony and Marvel can smile: Spider-Man: Brand New Day retains first place at the North American box office for its sixth consecutive weekend, with approximately $22 million in revenue estimated over the four days of a long weekend (this Monday will be a holiday in the USA).

The film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton has just crossed $900 million in the United States, a feat achieved by only two films in history. In a few days it will exceed 936 million Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2017) and become the biggest success of all time on American soil.

But it is on a global scale that the record is even more spectacular. With more than $2.33 billion in revenue, Spider-Man: Brand New Day just doubled Avatar: The Way of Water and settles into third place in the all-time rankings, just behind Avengers: Endgame (2.80 billion) and Avatar (2.92 billion). The Weaver is still around 460 million dollars behind the Avengers film and almost 590 million behind that of James Cameron: despite its incredible career, these two peaks will therefore a priori be too difficult to reach.

Behind him, The Odyssey by Christopher Nolan maintains second place for the weekend with an estimated additional $16.4 million. The film, which is in its eighth week and also stars Tom Holland, should reach $588.1 million on the North American market on Monday. Worldwide, the epic now exceeds $1.57 billion and enters the Top 15 of the biggest hits of all time, ahead of Avengers of 2012, which ended at 1.52 billion.

Nolan’s film can still climb the hierarchy. The Lion King live from Jon Favreau (1.66 billion), the first Jurassic World (1.67 billion) and the cartoon Vice-Versa 2 (1.70 billion) are all within firing range, just a few tens of millions. On the other hand, the Top 10 seems out of reach: Zootopia 2currently tenth, has nearly $1.9 billion.

Among the new features of the weekend, By Any MeansElegance Bratton’s crime thriller, is expected to gross around $7 million over the four days. The film, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Mark Wahlberg, recounts the investigation of an FBI agent sent to Mississippi in the 1960s to investigate the assassinations of several civil rights figures. It does not yet have a French release date.

Another novelty, Onslaughtthe horror action film from Adam Wingard, director of Godzilla vs. Kongis expected to end its weekend around $2 million after bringing in $782,000 on Friday. Adria Arjona, Ancient of the Universe Star Wars and soon on display Superman 2plays a veteran forced to protect her daughter against murderous super-soldiers. No French release date either.
