What do critics say about Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey?

The filmmaker’s new film is almost unanimous. Hailed as a monumental spectacle, some consider it his masterpiece. Press review.

Will it be as successful at the box office as in the press?

While waiting to know the first operating figures, Christopher Nolan convinced the critics with his Odyssey ! 96% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (for nearly 300 reviews listed) and 97% favorable opinions from the public, that’s huge. His Homeric epic stands out as one of the best-received films of the British director’s career, with most media praising the scale of the spectacle and the way in which Nolan brought Homer’s poem to life.

Same enthusiasm from the Daily Mail, which estimates that the almost three hours of the film pass at breakneck speed: “There is so much to savor that one session is not enough.”

Hoyte van Hoytema’s direction and photography are also widely celebrated. The Times speaks of images of “breathtaking beauty”, enhanced by a golden light which reinforces the epic nature of the journey.

For Rolling Stone, The Odyssey is even “Christopher Nolan’s best film since Dunkirk“, leaving the viewer with “a permanent feeling of wonder” thanks to one of the “most dynamic cinematic experiences of recent years.”

Same for Entertainment Weekly who really wonders if The Odyssey is not Nolan’s best film. The magazine believes that the director “manages to combine the spectacular breath of Inception with the thematic depth of Oppenheimer.”

On the side of ComingSoonwe celebrate a show “grandiose, overwhelming, visually stunning and totally immersive, which reminds us why films are made to be seen in the cinema“.

Some voices, however, are a little more nuanced.

Variety admires the ambition and power of the film but regrets a certain “emotional coldness“. The magazine salutes the interpretation of Matt Damon, while estimating that “the work impresses more with its sensations than with its emotion”.

Forbestoo, applauds the artistic direction, sets, costumes and action scenes, while pointing out some problems with pacing and editing.

Finally, The Hollywood Reporter judge The Odyssey more “unequal“thatOppenheimer. The media believes that the film does not achieve the narrative mastery of its predecessor, while recognizing that its impressive casting gives it undeniable strength.
