If the actress-director’s first achievement, The Lost Daughterprize for best screenplay at the Venice Film Festival, was a drama recounting a poorly experienced motherhood, The Bride! is a horror film about a crooked wife. Maggie Gyllenhaal therefore chooses to feature those who take a step aside.
The Bride! is a remake of the James Whale film, The Bride of Frankensteinreleased in 1935.
The director finds two of the actors already present in the casting of The Lost DaughterJessie Buckley (Wild Rose), who this time plays the main role, and Peter Sarsgaard (Boys Don’t Cry). Alongside them, star actors Christian Bale (American Psycho) in the role of Frankenstein and Penélope Cruz (Volver) in a supporting role. We will also find the director’s little brother, actor Jake Gyllenhaal (The Secret of Brokeback Mountain).
Synopsis: Frankenstein travels to Chicago in the 1930s and asks visionary scientist Dr. Euphronious to create a companion for him. Together, they resurrect a murdered young woman, and the bride comes to life! But what happens next goes beyond anything they could have imagined: murders, possessions, and an outlaw couple who find themselves at the center of a radical and unbridled social movement, and a passionate and tumultuous love story!
