He’s THE director of queer romance and he’s back with De Noche.
The French company mk2 Films joined the dance to finance From Nochethe project of Todd Haynes who had been abandoned by Joaquin Phoenix. She will also handle international sales. Fionnuala Jamison, its director, expresses Variety his joy of working with the director: “Only a few filmmakers are capable of creating such a strong connection with the audience as Todd Haynes does.”
After Far from paradise, Carol And May Decemberthe director is back with a new romance. In the magnificent Carol it featured a homosexual love story between characters played by Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. A drama set in the New York winter.
Eleven years later, Todd Haynes returns with another queer love story, this time between two men and under the Mexican sun.
In the casting of From Noche we will find the young actor Danny Ramirez (No way out) and Pedro Pascal (Eddington), recently arrived on film. Joaquin Phoenix was initially supposed to star opposite the actor in No way out. But the interpreter of Joker had abandoned the film 5 days before filming began, stopping filming completely. Ironically, Pedro Pascal and Joaquin Phoenix faced each other a few months later in Ari Aster’s last film, Eddington.
Two years later, From Noche is back on its feet. If in August we learned that Pedro Pascal was in negotiations to replace Phoenix, it is now confirmed. Filming will begin next month according to Variety.
The director’s next film, nominated for an Oscar in the best screenplay category for May Decembertakes place in Los Angeles in the 1930s and depicts a love story between a police officer and his lover on the run to Mexico. Another outdated film like Far from paradise And Carol which took place in the 1950s.
The feature film is inspired by a classic of the 7th art, the thriller Chinatown.
Interviewed by Variety Todd Haynes stated that “This story (…) depicts a time – much more turbulent than ours – where domestic corruption, racial exploitation and terror reigned in the world. But the story emerges as a testimony to the inexplicable powers of desire and love to survive and overcome even the most crippling human barriers.”
The release date of From Noche is not yet known.
