Katie Holmes writes heartbreaking farewell letter to James Van Der Beek

The interpreter of Joey, who spent his entire youth in Dawson’s room, published a heartbreaking message to welcome the departure of his comrade from Capeside.

A few hours after the disappearance of James Van Der Beek, who died at the age of 48 from cancer, the emotion is great for his lifelong comrade, Katie Holmes.

The unforgettable Joey, caught between Dawson the romantic and Pacey the rebel, shared a moving farewell letter to the man who was her first playing partner. She, who spent her entire youth dreaming under the Spielbergian posters of her kind neighbor, took it upon herself to write this little note by hand. Katie Holmes writes:

“James,
THANKS. Sharing space with your imagination is sacred. Breathing the same air in the land of make-believe and trusting each other, knowing that our hearts are safe in their expression… These are some of my memories, among the laughter, the conversations about life, the songs of James Taylor – the adventures of a unique youth…
Courage, compassion, altruism. Strength. A deep love of life and the actions taken to live it, the integrity of one who believed that life is an art – creating a beautiful marriage, six loving children – a hero’s journey.
I mourn this loss with a heart that carries both the reality of his absence and a deep gratitude for the mark he left there.”

For her part, her fictional mother, Mary-Margaret Humes, who played Gail Leery, Dawson’s mother in Capeside, also paid tribute to her on Instagram:

“Rarely am I at a loss for words… today is an exception. James, my gracious warrior, you fought a difficult battle against all odds with such quiet strength and dignity. I will always love and admire you for that. Our last conversations… just a few days ago… will forever be held gently in my heart. To our extended ‘Dawson’s Creek’ family… please respect our silences at this time, as the beautiful Kimberly and her family have asked.”
