Palm Royale canceled by Apple TV

The series starring Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern and Allison Janney will not have a season 3.

Despite receiving 11 Emmy nominations for its first season, the comedy series created by Abe Sylvia is bowing out, Variety announces. Palm Royale depicts the posh American society of the 60s. In 1969, in the state of Florida Maxine Simmons played by Kristen Wiig, tries as best she can to find a place in the high society of Palm Beach. The series adapted from Juliet McDaniel’s novel, Mr & Mrs American Pie, premieres in March 2024 on Apple TV.

Season 2 earned its lead actress a nomination as best actress at the Screen Actors Guild.

As is often the case with the streaming platform, the reasons for this end of the contract have not been communicated. We can nevertheless imagine that the critical reception, more or less good, is at the origin. If in France, the series is rated 3.5/5 by the public and 3.3/5 by the press on AlloCiné, in the United States, the rating on IMDb is 6.8/10 and 60% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s not a bad score, but perhaps not enough to give rise to a renewal… Conversely, other comedy series broadcast on Apple TV, like Ted Lasso or The Studio, very well received, 90% positive opinions on Rotten Tomatoes for the first, against 93% for the second, saw their contract renewed.

The franchise brings together a 5-star cast including Kristen Wiig (My Best Friends), Laura Dern (Blue Velvet), Allison Janney (Me, Tonya), and Leslie Bibb (The White Lotus).

Although acclaimed, Palm Royale’s performance does not seem to have been strong enough to continue the adventure with the American platform.

The second season ended last January with a plot left hanging, in front of blissful spectators…
