The Wild Robot 2: the sequel is finally moving forward, but with a new director

Chris Sanders will not return and hands over to Troy Quane, director of the very beautiful Nimona from Netflix.

The continuation of The Wild Robot is finally starting to become clearer.

Released in 2024, the animated film from DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures, adapted from the novel by Peter Brown, was written and directed by Chris Sanders, with Lupita Nyong’o lending her voice to the robot Roz. A sequel was announced in October 2024. Since then, information has been scarce.

But according to TheWrapthe project is indeed progressing. Despite some notable changes.

The film will be titled Wild robot on the run (The Wild Robot Escapes) as the second book in the Peter Brown saga.

Chris Sanders will not return to directing, but remains the project’s screenwriter. The direction was therefore entrusted to Troy Quane, supported by Heidi Jo Gilbert as co-director. Jeff Hermann resumes his role as producer.

Troy Quane knows animation well: he notably co-directed The Incognitos (2019) and especially the very successful Nimona from Netflix (2023) nominated for an Oscar.

Previously, he had signed solo The Smurfs: The Christmas Carol (2011) and worked as an animator on numerous films. He also worked as a storyboarder on Once Upon a Time (2007) or Hotel Transylvania (2012) and also Ferdinand (2017).

In the book Wild robot on the run by Peter Brown the story picks up after the events of the first opus. Shipwrecked on a wild island, the robot Roz had learned to survive among animals and adapt to their world. But what happens next poses a new question: will she be able to face the challenges of the civilized world and find her way back to the island… and to Brightbill?

No release date has yet been announced for this sequel.
