When will Fjord, the 2026 Palme d’Or, be released in France at the cinema?
Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu becomes the 10th director in history to win two Palmes d’Or.
Crowned Palme d’Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Fjord marks the great return to the top of Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu.
A chilling drama about family, religion and the way others see it will be released in French theaters this summer.
Three years after their first collaboration in A Different ManSebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve therefore find themselves at the heart of Cristian Mungiu’s new film. The Marvel star, revealed to the general public in the role of the Winter Soldier and seen last year at Cannes in The Apprenticeshares the poster with the Norwegian actress of Julie (in 12 chapters) And Sentimental value.
In Fjordthey play the Gheorghiu, a very pious Romanian-Norwegian couple who settle in a small isolated village on the edge of a Scandinavian fjord. Quickly integrated into the community, they became friends with their neighbors, the Halbergs. But when bruises are discovered on the body of their eldest daughter, Elia, doubt sets in: has their strict and traditional upbringing become dangerous?
With this new Cannes triumph, Cristian Mungiu wins his second Palme d’Or after 4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days in 2007. He thus becomes the fourth doubly awarded filmmaker of the 21st century, after Ruben Östlund (The Square in 2017 and Without filter in 2022), Ken Loach (The Wind rises in 2006 and Me, Daniel Blake in 2016) and Michael Haneke (The White Ribbon in 2009 and Love in 2012).
There are now ten directors to have won two Palmes d’Or in their career. Alongside the four above mentioned, we also find the brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (Rosette in 1999 and The Child in 2005), Francis Ford Coppola (Secret conversation in 1974 and Apocalypse Now in 1979), Emir Kusturica (Dad is on a business trip in 1985 and Underground in 1995), Shohei Imamura (The Ballad of Narayama in 1983 and The Eel in 1997) or Bille August (Pelle the conqueror in 1988 and The Best Intentions in 1992).
