Arthur Harari is back behind the camera with L’Inconnue, a disturbing fantasy thriller screened at Cannes.

After winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Anatomy of a fall (co-written with his partner in the city Justine Triet), Arthur Harari returns to directing with The Unknownpresented in official competition at the last Cannes Film Festival.

The filmmaker signs his first film since Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle (2021), after getting noticed with Black Diamond in 2015.

The story follows David Zimmerman, a talented photographer”but no one knows. While he almost never leaves his house, friends drag him to a crazy party. He spots a woman in the crowd, can’t take his eyes off her, follows her… A few hours later, David wakes up: he is in the stranger’s body.”

The trailer (below) promises an auteurist body swap movie, carried by Léa Seydoux and Niels Schneider, also with Valérie Dréville, Shanti Masud, Radu Jude, Jonathan Turnbull, Lilith Grasmug and Victoire Du Bois in the cast.

With The UnknownArthur Harari confirms his return to directing while pursuing a unique journey, between demanding auteur cinema and genre stories.

Released in theaters on August 26, 2026 in France.
