Why Backrooms is set in the 90s
Director Kane Parsons explains the choice of the 90s as the backdrop for his maze film.
From the web series The Backroomscreated in 2022, in its cinema version which has just been released in French cinemas, there are several common points which allow us to define the contours of a mythology as sprawling as it is enigmatic. The corridors carpeted in yellow, of course, the wanderings with camera in hand in mode found footageobviously, but also the temporal anchoring of the story in the early 1990s.
Why this choice? Director Kane Parsons (born in 2005) explains to us the reasons which pushed him to anchor the universe of Backrooms in this era:
“The series and the film take place mainly in the early 90s, in Encino, California, in the San Fernando Valley. The beginning of the 90s was a moment of cultural metamorphosis – for the whole planet, but particularly for the United States. There is a kind of strangeness in the 90s, but also a lightness, a form of optimism that would soon die out. Some technological organizations had not yet fully anchored themselves in space This technological influence was nevertheless already boiling under the surface, it would soon explode and conquer the smallest corners of the industrialized world, I see them as a kind of last fanfare before gray clouds form above our heads in the 2000s.
Was it better before? So go take a look at the Backrooms and see.
Backroomsby Kane Parsons, with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass… Currently in cinemas.
