Jim Parsons was ‘unhappy’ at the top of The Big Bang Theory

Despite the triumph of The Big Bang Theory, Jim Parsons claims to have experienced years of deep stress.

To millions of viewers, he was Sheldon, Pasadena’s lovable, eccentric genius.

Jim Parsons was the face of success on The Big Bang Theory for 12 seasons. But behind the scenes, the American actor was going through a very difficult period which he recounts today. In an interview with the All Out with Jon Dean podcast, the 53-year-old actor said he was deeply “unhappy” at the height of the sitcom’s popularity:

“When I look back on this period today, I realize that at some of the most beautiful moments of my life, I was unhappy. I was not happy. I was very stressed, anxious…”

The actor, who won four Emmy Awards thanks to his role as a physicist, explains that this discomfort came above all from the pressure he imposed on himself. Convinced that his success was based solely on relentless work, Jim Parsons lived in fear of not being good enough:

“I felt like I had to balance a multitude of plates all the time. I thought that anything good that happened to me was only possible because of this excessive discipline and over-investment.”

Looking back, Jim Parsons says he would never make such a sacrifice again, whatever the cost:

“I wouldn’t do that again, even for all the money in the world! It was stressful and miserable at times. I was the one making myself unhappy.”

He also admits that his almost obsessive behavior prevented him from enjoying what he had built: “I had a mental list of things that I absolutely had to accomplish to be reassured and to do my job properly. Looking back, I don’t even think that was true.” A permanent demand which led him to abandon his loved ones: “I missed a lot of moments of life!”

During the last seasons of The Big Bang Theory, Jim Parsons was one of the highest paid actors on television, with a salary of one million dollars per episode. His portrayal of Sheldon earned him four Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe and immense popularity.

Even after the series ended in 2019, the actor never really left the franchise. He was the narrator and executive producer of Young Sheldon, before reprising the role of Sheldon, alongside Mayim Bialik, in the series finale in 2024. A new spin-off, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, is about to launch on HBO Max with Kevin Sussman in the lead role, and fans are already speculating about a new appearance by Jim Parsons…
