Ed Harris furious with Dutton Ranch: ‘I felt cheated’

When casting the series about Beth Dutton, the actor reveals that he almost slammed the door on the Yellowstone spin-off in the middle of filming.

A few days after the end of season 1, the actor assures that he is not happy with his place in Dutton Ranch. And when Ed Harris isn’t happy, he doesn’t hold back to let it be known…

Present at the premiere of The Dink, his latest film, Ed Harris told Variety that he had a very bad experience on the Yellowstone spin-off, going so far as to ask his agents to find him a way out:

“I signed for two seasons…” he says, looking quite annoyed before clarifying: “But I wanted to leave halfway through season 1. I asked my team to fucking get me out of there!”

Ed Harris believes he was cheated out of his place in the show:

“Before signing, it was explained to me at length what the season was going to be, what my character was going to do, and above all that he would be one of the four main characters. In reality, that was not the case at all.”

In the Taylor Sheridan series, he plays Everett McKinney, a veterinarian based in Texas, where Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) try to build their own ranch after leaving Montana. But the Apollo 13 actor says he quickly felt like he was being relegated to the background.

“I felt underutilized and unimportant.”

Ed Harris claims to have expressed his dissatisfaction to production, without directly quoting Taylor Sheridan.

“I explained that I felt useless in the story. I was just told, ‘Ah…’ I was assured that my character will have more to do in season 2. I was just frustrated, to be honest.”

Another episode particularly annoyed him. A scene in which his character sang in a bar:

“There’s this scene… I’m talking to Beth at the counter and Rip comes up and says, ‘Okay, Everett, come on, it’s your turn to sing.’

Looking back, the actor nevertheless recognizes that the final result is more convincing than what he felt during filming.

“When I saw the series, I thought it was pretty good and I realized that my character ultimately had some importance in the story. But during filming, I didn’t feel it at all.”

Despite this anger, Ed Harris is well underway for a second season of Dutton Ranch, launched last May on Paramount+. It remains to be seen whether the promises of a more substantial role will be enough to convince the actor to continue the adventure in the world of Yellowstone for the long term.
