Manifest returns: Netflix orders a new spin-off series

Manifest takes off again!

Netflix has just ordered Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery, a new spin-off set in the universe of the science fiction series, symbolically announced yesterday, August 28, i.e. 8/28 dear to the mythology of the series.

And for this new adventure, the platform is banking on a team already well known to fans. Jeff Rake, creator and showrunner of Manifest, returns to the helm alongside Margaret Easley and Laura Putney, both former executive producers of the series. The trio will serve as co-creator, co-showrunner, writer and executive producer of Arrivals.

Ended in 2023 after four seasons, Manifest told the fate of the passengers of Flight 828, mysteriously reappearing after five years of absence even though its occupants had not aged a day. Netflix saved the series after its cancellation by NBC and gave it a real conclusion. But its creator now believes that this universe can continue to live:

“The world of Manifest still has stories to tell,” explains Jeff Rake, who promises with Arrivals a story that is “bold, surprising, deeply human” and filled with new big ideas.

The starting point is obviously reminiscent of that of the original series: “When a mysterious plane crash-lands in Denver, the passengers emerge with no memory of their identity, where they come from or why they are there. A young social worker and a rookie Homeland Security agent team up with these newcomers to try to prevent a catastrophe threatening humanity, discovering in the process that they themselves are an integral part of the enigma they seek to solve” details the synopsis.

The big question that fans are asking is obviously the presence or not of the characters from Manifest in this new series. Will it be a straight sequel or a side story?

Netflix has not yet confirmed the presence of Melissa Roxburgh and Josh Dallas, the two stars of Manifest who played siblings Michaela and Ben Stone.

However, the door seems far from closed. Jeff Rake assures that he sought a balance to satisfy historical fans while offering a real gateway to new spectators. A statement which clearly leaves open the possibility of finding some familiar faces.

The model could thus be closer to Heroes Reborn, which extended the Heroes universe by introducing a new generation of characters while bringing back several original figures.

For Netflix, the return of the original creative team is precisely the best guarantee of preserving the DNA of Manifest. Jinny Howe, head of scripted series for Netflix in the United States and Canada, assures that this continuity will “honor what made the original series a phenomenon” while offering a new perspective.
