Tom Cruise announces Days of Thunder 2 with Anne Hathaway for summer 2028

After relaunching Top Gun, the star is hitting the road again and will resume his role as a NASCAR driver with a new racing partner.

Nearly 40 years after Tony Scott’s classic, which has become an emblem of car films, Tom Cruise will take the wheel again.

Paramount has just announced the release of Days of Thunder 2 for the start of summer 2028, with Anne Hathaway facing the star of Top Gun. The film will be shot for IMAX screens and will be released exclusively in cinemas, notably in Dolby Cinema and 4DX.

Tom Cruise will return to his character of Cole Trickle, a NASCAR driver who is as talented as he is a hothead. Anne Hathaway will play a team owner and automotive engineer. Jonathan Levine, director of Warm Bodies will be behind the camera, while Cruise will produce the film with Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper.

In the Days of Thunder original, released in 1990, Cole Trickle was recruited into a new NASCAR team by a former champion played by the late Robert Duvall.

It was Nicole Kidman who played the female lead at the time, while she was engaged to Tom Cruise in the city. We don’t yet know if she could return in this sequel. Obviously, the on-screen reunion of the ex-star couple would be an event.

In the meantime, this new film above all marks a new stage in Tom Cruise’s career after the end of Mission: Impossible. The actor is also set to return in Top Gun 3but first he offers a foray into prestige cinema, this fall, with the next film by Alejandro González Iñárritu, Digger.

For Anne Hathaway, this will be a great first, since she has never toured with the superstar.

Days of Thunder 2 is expected in cinemas on June 2, 2028 in the United States and in the same waters in France.
