Tears and laughter: the trailer for the documentary on Matthew Perry

Entitled The One Who Called Matthew Perry, the three-episode documentary will look back on the life of the Friends actor, between fame, humor and addiction.

“The one called Matthew Perry.”

The title of the new Netflix documentary already says a lot about what this three-episode series dedicated to the Friends actor wants to tell.

The platform has just revealed the trailer, before being put online on October 27, three years to the day after the death of Matthew Perry.

Through testimonies from his sister Mia Perry Bowick, several relatives and previously unseen images from the Perry family’s private archives, the documentary looks back at the journey of the man who will forever remain associated with Chandler Bing. But it also focuses on the man behind the character, his complicated relationship with fame and his long battle with addiction.

The trailer notably shows a Matthew Perry who discovers that fame may not be exactly what he hoped for. Behind the laughter and global success of Friends, the documentary recounts the years of drug use, the attempts to become sober and the consequences of this addiction on his life.

“It took me a while to feel ready to share these memories and what it meant to love Matthew through all the complexity of his life – to see him as a whole person, not just as Chandler or as someone who struggled with addiction,” his sister said in a statement. She continues: “Matthew had a beautiful heart and a generous spirit and, even in his darkest moments, he could still make you laugh and make you feel loved.”

Directed by Mary Robertson, The One Who Called Matthew Perry promises to look back at the man behind one of the most popular sitcoms in history, far from just Chandler Bing’s costume.
