The film in theaters: Our Salvation by Emmanuel Marre
Collaboration as if you were there! Not a documentary, but almost. A great film for sure. Very mobile camera, frontal lighting, pale complexion, confined spaces, man without quality. Our Salvation is the story of a guy who is looking for his place in Vichy France, ready to do anything to serve a compromised regime. Not the perfect bastard. He doesn’t have the scale. Henri Marre (Swann Arlaud), being transparent, blends in with the decor. In voice-over, his wife Paulette (Sandrine Blancke), sends him letters scuds with murderous gentleness. Our Salvation advances towards a double annihilation: moral and sentimental. This France of the 1940s filmed as if it were our own sends shivers down the spine. What if Henri Marre was a bit of all of us?
The series: East of Eden
Seventy years after her grandfather Elia Kazan, Zoe Kazan delivers her version of East of Eden and signs a full adaptation of John Steinbeck’s great novel. An incredibly rich seven-episode mini-series, much more faithful than the 1955 film, and which embraces the entire Trask saga by shifting its gaze towards Cathy, the poisonous manipulator, played here by a formidable Florence Pugh. By also giving a central place to Lee – the Trask’s Chinese servant – Zoe Kazan offers a modern rereading of the novel, without betraying her favorite themes. A sumptuous adaptation, impeccably written and beautifully directed.
