What we know (so far) about Lanterns season 2
Chris Mundy is cautious about the future of the DC series, while leaving several doors open, particularly around the past of Sheriff Kerry.
The sequel to Lanterns will already be in Superman: Man of Tomorrow, next summer at the cinema. Aaron Pierre and Nathan Fillion have been announced as part of the casting and will certainly resume their discussion which brilliantly concluded season 1, on HBO Max.
But is a season 2 planned?
Chris Mundy, co-showrunner of the series, prefers to keep a cool head for the moment. He responds in EW:
“We always approach these situations with the assumption that something will happen, without being heartbroken if it doesn’t. We’re all happy and proud of Season 1 and especially happy that people seem to like it for the reasons we had in mind. If there’s more, great. And if there isn’t, we’ve had our moment.”
In other words, no certainty about the sequel at this stage, but the authors did not imagine Lanterns as a finished mini-series. She’s supposed to come back.
Mundy says he doesn’t have a long-term plan for Lanterns and doesn’t know how many seasons it might last:
“I think it’s usually the story that dictates it to you. You move forward a little bit and you just end up feeling when maybe you’re past the point where you had to stop. But obviously, I’m not there today. It’s not like we had in mind a story three acts, three seasons or whatever… Not at all. It’s more: what’s interesting? Are the people who make the show still interested and are those who watch it still are? Is that what dictates what happens next.”
Sheriff Kerry’s past still a mystery
A possible season 2 could in particular allow us to return to the past of Sheriff Kerry, deliberately left in the dark. Lanterns has only revealed a few fragments. Who was she running from when she arrived in Gotham? And what really happened before the events of the series? Chris Mundy confirms that this question was carefully considered by the writers:
“It’s an open question that we want to leave open. We have a few leads, but we like the mystery. We even touched on it in the cafe scene. So we’ve talked about it quite a bit, but we like that it remains a mystery for now.”
No season 2 officially announced. But Lanterns obviously still has a few secrets to pull out of his hat…
