The film in theaters: Neither seen nor known by Marc Fitoussi

In front of Marc Fitoussi’s camera, which she reunites with after Copacabana, La Ritournelle and an episode of Dix pour cent, Isabelle Huppert plays… an extra who goes on sets hoping to finally have the chance to be spotted and will come across – in their own roles – Sandrine Kiberlain, Anne Marivin, Ana Girardot, Diane Krüger, Vincent Dedienne and Emmanuelle Bercot. And Huppert amazes by the way in which she appears instantly credible in a role of thousandth-power composition and by making herself the vector of everything that this comedy carries here behind it: the description of the backstage of cinema as a place of hierarchical power and the small annoyances and great humiliations that go with it. A cruel farce tinged with great melancholy.

The series: Carrie by Mike Flanagan

A new version of Carrie, what’s the point? What more can we say about Stephen King’s novel after Brian De Palma’s crazy film? The question was legitimate, but Mike Flanagan, an expert in Kingian adaptations (this is his fourth, after Jesse, Doctor Sleep and Life of Chuck) very quickly dispels doubts, by considering the eight episodes of his mini-series as a hypersensitive teenage fresco, which aims to take the pulse of American youth in 2026, while placing the character of Carrie White in a genealogy of heroic and oppressed women, somewhere between Jeanne from Arc and Eleven from Stranger Things. The approach, fine and touching, is characteristic of the worried humanism of the creator of The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Sermons. If we shiver here, it’s less from fear than from emotion.
