The Vikings are back: Bloodaxe trailer

“For the sake of a crown, even brothers can become enemies…”

Five years after the end of Vikings, whose sixth and final season was broadcast in 2020-2021, Michael Hirst dives back into Scandinavian history with Bloodaxe. But rather than prolonging the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok’s sons, the creator goes back in time to 927 to tell the story of the rise of Erik Bloodaxe and his wife Gunnhild, in the heart of a Norway torn apart by power struggles. A new Viking saga that promises its share of epic battles and bloody betrayals.

The plot begins when King Harald Fair Hair, aging and ill, must designate his successor. Erik Bloodaxe, one of the most famous Viking warriors in history, claims the throne of Norway. At his side, his formidable wife Gunnhild, nicknamed the “Mother of Kings”, helps him face his many enemies. But his younger brother Haakon, raised as a Christian in England, also returned with claims to power and the support of an English fleet.

The synopsis states: “The rise of Erik Bloodaxe, one of the most famous Viking warriors in Scandinavian history, and his fearsome wife, Gunnhild, the ‘Mother of Kings,’ as they fight for the throne of Norway. The land is torn apart by fierce rivals, shifting loyalties and bloody betrayals. As war looms and chaos ravages the kingdom, attracting ruthless kings from other Scandinavian countries and even a powerful English ruler, the stage is set to introduce a thunderous, cataclysmic, fascinating and utterly magical new Viking saga.”

Bloodaxe, a new historical series expected on January 20 on Prime Video
