César 2024: Première’s predictions and favorites
Who will succeed La Nuit du 12, awarded seven times last year? Anatomy of a fall? The Animal Kingdom? Will Raphaël Quenard be the first to win three Césars in the same evening? Answers Friday evening on Canal +
Each edition has its own suspense. After the duel The Night of the 12th/The Innocent, won last year by Dominik Moll’s seven-time award-winning film, including the double best film-director, this year it will revolve around two of the great successes of French auteur cinema of 2023: Anatomb of a fall by Justine Triet and The Animal Kingdom by Thomas Cailley (record holder for nominations with 12) and the question of whether, after collecting awards all over the world, Justine Triet will also be queen in her country. By winning the César for best film, she would be the third to do the Palme d’Or-César double for best film after The pianist by Roman Polanski and Love of Michael Haneke but only the second wife (24 years after Tonie Marshall for Venus beauty) to win in the best achievement category! As for their competitors, we imagine more I will always see your faces by Jeanne Herry to establish herself in a supporting role thanks to Adèle Exarchopoulos, Dog of the breakage by Jean-Baptiste Durand in his first film and The Goldman Trial as best actor.
Among the actors, Arieh Worthalter indeed seems untouchable for his interpretation of Pierre Goldman, even if he finds himself facing a competitor like no other, Raphaël Quenard, who could go down in César history by being the first to win three Caesars in three different categories, the same evening. Actor therefore for Yannickrevelation for Dog of the breakage and short documentary film (The Actor or the surprising virtue of incomprehension). But between this hat-trick and leaving empty-handed, there is only one step, including in the male revelation category where the impressive composition of Paul Kircher in The Animal Kingdom poses him as a more than serious competitor. While among the female revelations, Kim Higelin (The consent) seems favorite but closely followed by Ella Rumpf (The Theorem of Daisy) and Rebecca Marder (Great expectations).
CESAR 2024: THE ANIMAL KINGDOM AND ANATOMY OF A FALL AT THE HEAD OF THE NOMINATIONS
As for the actresses, Sandra Hüller seems to have a head start in terms of predictions because beyond her composition, she plays in the film (Anatomy of a fall) which, on paper, was the most seen by voters. But if they rush en masse to discover little girl blue and RaptureMarion Cotillard (for her first nomination in 7 years) who delivers the most impressive composition of her career and Hafsia Herzi (16 years after her César of revelation for La Graine et le mule) will be more than formidable competitors.
Finally, in the foreign film category, we imagine Oppenheimer worth his first statuette to Christopher Nolan (he who had been unsuccessfully nominated for Inception And Dunkirk) in addition to the honorary César which will be awarded to him. But again, nothing is automatic. We still remember Steven Spielberg who came to receive the same honorary César in 95 and competed with Schneider’s List at the César for foreign film, beaten by Four weddings and a funeral, which no one saw coming. Will there be any surprises of this type for the 2024 edition? See you Friday from 8:45 p.m. on Canal +.
