David Castañeda (Diego) reacts to the last season of The Umbrella Academy

While reactions are strong after a thwarted finale, the star of the series does not share the fans’ complaints.

The Umbrella Academy recently ended on Netflix with a fourth season that was shorter than usual – six episodes instead of ten – and many fans expressed their disappointment on social media about a final season that left them with a bitter taste. Rushed for some, with unfinished narrative arcs and shortcuts taken, this finale left more than one person on the floor.

Faced with these reactionsDavid Castañedathe actor who plays the hero who wields knives, Diego, wanted to give his opinion while he was a guest on the podcast I’ve Never Said This Before With Tommy DiDario.

Umbrella Academy: The End of the Series Explained

In this final season, her character’s marriage to Lila (Ritu Arya) was on the rocks while a relationship was being woven between her and Five, one of the brothers played by Aidan Gallagher. A surprising romance, upsetting the relationships in this already dysfunctional family, and far from necessary for the fans. But not for the showrunner who defends it just like David Castañeda:

“I really like the fact that they take risks. I like it when they say ‘Oh, you thought this was going to be a buddy/buddy story’ and then you turn it around with Five and Diego, and it makes people angry. I saw that and I thought ‘My God, the public is going to be angry when they see this.’ And I think that’s a good thing. It’s good to have that kind of reaction to something that can turn everything upside down.”

That’s not all. The explosive ending – spoiler alert – where, to save the world, the Hargreeves must literally disappear from the face of the Earth, also didn’t convince the spectators who were expecting to see the characters at least one last time. For the actor, as surprising as it is, this conclusion makes sense: “I’m proud of how things turned out. I’m very happy with the work we’ve all done over these four seasons.”

A feeling shared by Justin H.Minthe interpreter of Ben, central character of this season who declared to Peoplea few days ago: “I think it’s a satisfying ending. It’s obviously a dark ending, but it makes sense with what the show is.”

On the other hand, for Emmy Raver-Lampman who plays Alison, this one was frustrating: “I don’t like it, but it makes sense.”

For all the viewers who have not digested this finale, the adventures of the Umbrella Academy continue in bookstores thanks to the comics from which the series comes.
