Days of Thunder 2: Tom Cruise’s next film has found its director
The sequel project to the 1990 classic takes a decisive step forward with the arrival of Jonathan Levine behind the wheel.
Tom Cruise’s return to the circuits is taking shape.
After months of rumors, Paramount comes to pass the second on Days of Thunder 2sequel to the racing film released in 1990.
The studio hired a director: it is Jonathan Levine, to whom we owe in particular the comedies Warm Bodies (2013) and 50/50 (2011), which will feature this new adventure from pilot Cole Trickle. He will succeed the legendary Tony Scott, who directed the now cult NASCAR film. This will therefore be Tom Cruise’s next role in the cinema after Diggerby Alejandro G. Iñárritu, which will be released in the fall.
Released over 35 years ago, Days of Thunder followed the debut of young NASCAR driver Cole Trickle, recruited by a team led by a veteran of the discipline.
As for Top Gun: MaverickTom Cruise will not only reprise his role: he will also participate in the production of the film alongside historic producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The screenplay was entrusted to Will Staples, a regular on big action productions. He notably wrote the video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and co-wrote Without any remorse (2021) with Michael B. Jordan.
For the moment, no details have leaked about the plot, nor a filming or release date.
With the recent success of car racing films, notably F1 also produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Paramount clearly hopes to relaunch this cult franchise with a new generation of spectators. As he knew how to do with Top Gun.
