Dwayne Johnson becomes Maui in new live-action Moana movie trailer
Disney’s new live-action remake will be one of the summer’s events in theaters.

Disney has just revealed a brand new trailer for Moanahis new live-action remake, which finally reveals the first glimpse of Dwayne Johnson as Maui, live! The actor reprises here the role of the demigod he already voiced in the 2016 animated film, a huge critical and commercial success, accumulating $643 million at the worldwide box office. The film was also nominated for an Oscar for best animated film. The Rock appears with epic hair that will cause a lot of talk and under tattoos very faithful to the original character.
Opposite him, the young Catherine Laga’aia will play the new version of Vaiana (Auli’i Cravalho, original voice of the character in the 2016 film and its sequel released in 2024, this time serves as executive producer).
In the casting, John Tui plays Chief Tui, father of Moana; Frankie Adams plays his mother Sina; and Rena Owen plays the wise-cracking Gramma Tala.
The film is directed by Thomas Kail (Emmy and Tony Award winner for “Hamilton“), who here marks his first major live-action Disney adventure. The screenplay is co-written by Jared Bush (already author of the original film) and Dana Ledoux Miller.
Mark Mancina, composer of the 2016 film, also returns, while Lin-Manuel Miranda serves as producer.
Moana in live-action will be released in cinemas on July 8, December 2026 in France. Watch the new trailer below:
