When Beth Greene was killed in that hospital, the show was never the same. But during San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, a surprise announcement delighted fans: Emily Kinney will return to the horror saga and will reprise her role in season 3 of The Walking Dead: Dead City, currently in filming.
The announcement was made during the panel devoted to the spin-off series, before being confirmed by Entertainment Weekly, which also revealed the first photos and a video of the shoot bringing together Emily Kinney and Lauren Cohan, the interpreter of Maggie, Beth’s sister.
A question obviously arises: how is this possible? Beth has been dead for over ten years in The Walking Dead timeline, shot in the head by Officer Dawn in season 5. The answer is… a bit unusual. According to Entertainment Weekly, the episode marking her return will take place in an alternate reality, thus allowing Beth to reappear despite her disappearance in the original series: “We are really happy that Emily has agreed to come back,” rejoices Lauren Cohan in the video published by the magazine.
For her part, Emily Kinney admits to having been as surprised as the fans: “I never imagined that one day I would have the opportunity to play Beth again…”
Lauren Cohan warns, however, that this return will not leave anyone indifferent: “Get your tissues ready.”
Introduced in season 2 of The Walking Dead, Beth Greene was Hershel’s youngest daughter. Initially a reserved teenager, she gradually became one of the most popular characters in the series, regularly bringing a touch of sweetness in the middle of the apocalypse, and in the life of Daryl Dixon… Her brutal death, in the middle of season 5, remains one of the most traumatic moments of the series.
