First images and a date for Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar on Netflix
Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley and Richard Ayoade are at the heart of this short film adapted from Roald Dahl.
Henry Sugar is a wealthy man with a penchant for gambling. One day he reads a doctor’s report that describes a strange patient from India who is able to see despite having his eyes stitched together. Since then, the man would have developed strange abilities to perform an incredibly lucrative number in a circus. Henry discovers the method by which the doctors “removed” this man’s sight. Henry decides to do the same and eventually gives himself the power to see despite his sewn eyes. Using his powers, Henry submits to a series of charades designed to win him a huge sum of money.
When we have just learned that Wes Anderson would be one of the guests of honor at the Lumière festival 2023Netflix unveils the first images of its next film, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, with Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley and Richard Ayoade. It misses Ralph Fiennes, who is also in the cast.
We also learn from the streaming service that this 37-minute short film will be visible from September 27 on the platform.
A date set just after its presentation at the Venice Film Festival, but before being screened on the big screen at the Lumière festival, which will take place from October 15 to 22, 2023.
The Texas filmmaker, who released Asteroid City earlier this year, was hired by Netflix for this project after the platform signed a deal with the heirs of Roald Dahl to adapt several stories into films and series. This is the second time that this director is inspired by the work of the British author after the animated film Fantastic Mr. Fox, in 2009. He is also preparing a very personal filmabout a father and his daughter, which he plans to shoot in the fall with Michael Cera, Jeff Goldblum and Benicio del Toro.
