George Lucas describes his museum as “a temple of popular art”

Present at the Comic-Con Sunday with Guillermo del Toro and Doug Chiang, he wanted to assert the importance of narrative art, including that of comics.

While the legendary creator of Star Wars made his very first appearance at Comic-Conthousands of people have cheered the filmmaker on stage, presented by the rapper/actress Queen Latifah.

On this occasion, George Lucas received an ovation entirely dedicated to Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. Members of the board of directors and art collectors, Guillermo del Toro And Doug Chiangalso took part in the event to reveal the first images of the famous museum and defend narrative art, of which comics is part.

The American filmmaker – also at the origin of the saga Indiana Jones – qualified his establishment as “Temple dedicated to popular art”.

He then shared the memories of his first acquisitions of works of art during his university studies saying that he could only buy comics. Building on his success, he has enlarged his collection, which today has more than 40,000 pieces.

Guillermo del Toro added:

“” “We are going through a critical period when we like to make the past disappear. It is a question of commemorating a popular, vibrant and eloquent moment of our visual past, which belongs to all of us. And the museum celebrates this”.

For his part, Doug Chiang explained that comics had long been neglected:

“” “We don’t take it seriously”.

Through a video presentation, the mystery dissipates, revealing interior views of the museum as well as images from the collection. In addition to comics and paintings, the establishment of George Lucas will host conceptual illustrations and storyboards of his cult saga Star Wars.

The museum, whose opening has been repeatedly pushed, should open its doors In 2026 in Los Angeles.
