Guillermo del Toro defends Digger against critics
Digger can count on weight support. While Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s new film struggles to find its audience and frankly divides critics, Guillermo del Toro publicly comes to its defense.
While Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s film crashes at the box office and receives cold reviews to say the least – it currently has 51% on Rotten Tomatoes – Guillermo del Toro steps up to defend Digger.
The director of Pan’s Labyrinth attacked on X a particularly negative article from IGN devoted to the Warner Bros. film. :
“A totally mean title. Whether we like the film or not. And yes, I love him. The film delivers in terms of scale, ambition and big screen scope. Bold, cheeky and cinematically complex. An experience resolutely designed for rooms.”
Entirely Petty headline. Love it or not. And, yes, I do. The film delivers in scale, ambition and reach at a theatrical screen level. Daring, bold and Cinematically complex. Decidedly a Theatrical experience.

Del Toro also relayed several positive reviews of Diggerincluding some praising Tom Cruise’s performance:
“It’s funny, I go to the platform and, without even scrolling, these are the messages that appear at the top of my timeline… So… I’m going to continue sharing them. It’s up to you to watch or move on…“
Funny, I go into the platform and without even scrolling down, these are popping at the top of my timeline… So… I will just keep posting them. Tune in or drop out-

The filmmaker then compares the negative reception reserved for Digger to that which had received on their exit The Big Lebowski (1998), The Waltz of the Puppets (1982) and Cartel (2013), three films that received mixed or hostile reactions before gaining public recognition over time.
I remember the review for BIG LEBOWSKI and KING OF COMEDY and a few more… to me (I know it is still not accepted) THE COUNSELOR and all the ones in your list.

Tom Cruise himself came to defend the film on X.
Saturday, the day after the release of Digger in American theaters, the actor stepped up to the plate on his networks to explain that he fully embraced the film and his experience, posting photos of himself in the company of director Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
“I am honored to have had the opportunity to create this film alongside so many talented artists. Digger is officially in theaters and I am so honored to have had the opportunity to create this film alongside these exceptional artists. Thank you to the entire crew, cast and everyone who worked on the film for their dedication, hard work and joy. This experience will truly be unforgettable and I am very proud of what we have created.”
It now remains to be seen whether these weight supports will allow Digger to find a second wind in theaters.
