Pathé inaugurates France’s first 70mm IMAX screen for L’Odyssée

With the installation of a 70mm IMAX projector at the Pathé Odysseum in Montpellier, Pathé is taking a major step forward in the cinema experience in France.

Tourists on vacation in the south of France this summer will have a new attraction to discover!

Pathé cinemas announce the arrival of an IMAX 70mm projection system at the Pathé Odysseum in Montpellier, a first in France!

This rare technology currently only concerns an extremely limited number of theaters in the world, and only three in continental Europe. It allows films to be projected exactly as their directors designed them, in an exceptional film format.

The inauguration of this room will coincide with the release of The Odysseythe new film by Christopher Nolan, expected in France on July 15.

Concretely, what does that change?

This IMAX 70mm format is based on IMAX 65mm 15-perforation film, then printed at 70mm for projection. This process offers an image area approximately three times greater than that of standard film, allowing more content to be reproduced on the screen and enhanced immersion. It comes with a widened 1.43:1 ratio, exclusive to IMAX, particularly suited to large format screens.

At the Pathé Odysseum, the screen reaches 22.39 meters wide and 16.76 meters high, offering a projection scale designed to maximize visual impact and immersion. IMAX 70mm technology is also presented as the format offering the highest resolution available today, capable of reaching the equivalent of 18K, where the majority of digital projections are limited to 4K.

This technological choice is part of the continuity of collaborations between IMAX and directors committed to filming on 15/65mm film, a format which makes it possible to preserve a richness of image and a particularly high level of detail.

With this new installation, Pathé continues the development of its premium network and will now have 39 IMAX theaters, including 26 in France.
