Ari Aster wrote a prequel to ‘Heredity’ but he ‘don’t have time to do it’

The director of Midsommar and Beau Is Afraid reveals that he has written a film based on his first success… without knowing if he will one day shoot it.

Heredity: the origins ? Maybe one day…

During a question-and-answer session organized at the Egyptian Theater during a screening of Heredityhis first success released in 2018, Ari Aster surprised the audience by revealing that he had written a screenplay telling the prequel story of his horror film and its origins.

Except that the filmmaker immediately admits that no filming is planned at this stage.

I wrote the prequel to this movie, but it’s never the right time to do it… I never have time. It’s a story that takes place before, so not a sequel… I don’t really know where it could go.”

Released in 2018, Heredity marked Ari Aster’s debut as a feature film director and immediately imposed his signature on contemporary cinema.

Carried by Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro and Gabriel Byrne, the film follows the Graham family, whose balance is shattered after the death of the grandmother, revealing a spiral of drama and increasingly violent phenomena.

Since then, Ari Aster has continued with Midsommar, Beau Is Afraid and more recently Eddingtonall produced by A24.

During this exchange, the director also returned to the label often used to describe his films: “elevated horror”, meaning sophisticated horror made by authors. He firmly rejects it:

“I hate that term, mostly because it put me in a box and horror fans took it the wrong way…”

In any case, we already know that the filmmaker’s next project will not be this prequel, since he will direct Scarlett Johansson in Scapegoat.
