Lena Dunham has 'an idea' to bring Girls back with a film

HBO relaunches Girls with Lena Dunham and the whole gang

Ten years after the end of the series, Hannah, Marnie, Jessa and Shoshanna will return for five new episodes. Filming in summer 2027.

“Can we still call it Girls?”

In a short video posted on the networks, Lena Dunham announces the return of Girls with her playmates. The girls will return, but they have grown up, aged and, possibly, matured a little.

HBO has officially relaunched Girls, the generational comedy imagined by Lena Dunham, for a mini-season which will be five episodes. Filming will begin in the summer of 2027, ten years after the series finale (broadcast between 2012 and 2017).

The good news is that all four main actresses will be back. Lena Dunham will obviously reprise the role of Hannah Horvath, alongside Allison Williams (Marnie Michaels), Jemima Kirke (Jessa Johansson) and Zosia Mamet (Shoshanna Shapiro). Andrew Rannells will also return to his character of Elijah Krantz. Judd Apatow will once again serve as executive producer alongside Dunham.

A generational, daring and non-conformist series, Girls followed the sentimental, professional and existential setbacks of a group of friends in New York in the 2010s. A sometimes cruel, often embarrassing chronicle, which marked an entire generation by recounting the neuroses and disillusionments of twenty-somethings with a humor that was as biting as it was controversial.

“We always said we would only return to Girls if we had a specific story we wanted to tell,” Lena Dunham said in a statement. “I missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t really imagine them in the present. Then, around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once that group of five starts talking, it’s pretty hard to keep them quiet… It’s rare to have the chance to return to a work that changed your life, with hindsight and renewed gratitude and understanding. I love these girls (and this guy), our friends at HBO, and everyone who continues to discover the show and remind us why we do this: for the joy of being together…and the chance to wear yellow fishnet…”

On the HBO side, the return of the series will above all allow us to explore the transition to quarantine. Amy Gravitt, head of comedy programming at the channel, points out that the world has changed profoundly since Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, Shoshanna and Elijah last appeared. “To say the world has changed since we left Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, Jessa and Elijah is a massive understatement, but we know fans – old and new – will be happy to see their evolution and relieved that they are still the Girls we knew back then.”

No release date announced yet, but it certainly won’t be before 2028.
