After Before the night, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly And At the gate of eternityAmerican director Julian Schnabel is back with this adaptation of the eponymous novel by Nick Tosches, published in 2002.

Co-written with Louise Kugelberg, the film takes place between the 14th and 21st centuries, and recounts the discovery by a Sicilian priest – not without consequences – of a manuscript in Dante’s hand in the Vatican library. In 2024, Schnabel entrusted Variety his thoughts on Martin Scorsese: “He is extraordinary in the film” he declared before adding that his role was “remarkable and important“. A role of mentor from whom Dante asks for advice and “probably the only man whose opinion counts in Dante’s eyes” specified the director.

This is not the first time that the filmmaker time of innocence walks in front of the camera. We recently found him in his film Killers of the Flower Moonbut also for a memorable cameo in the series The Studio by Seth Rogen.

The passage of In the Hand of Dante at the Venice Film Festival last September, did not leave critics with much memory. It only has 43% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
