James Gunn doesn’t want to let the public decide which DC movies to make
The boss of DC Studios recalls that Hollywood does not operate by public vote.
“But who asked for a Clayface movie?“
The question, asked this week to James Gunn on Threads, obviously did not amuse the boss of DC Studios much. His response is rather muscular.
“Who asked for Back to the Future? Casablanca? Mary at all costs? Pan’s Labyrinth? Mad Max: Fury Road? Weapons? Matrix?” he replied. Before driving the point home: “As much as it may seem like it, Hollywood is not a place where the only way to make a movie is to have the public vote for the franchises they want to see when they have already seen them countless times…“
James Gunn then developed his thoughts in a second message:
“Sometimes someone – in this case, first Mike Flanagan, then James Watkins and Hossein Amini – is inspired by a relatively little-known fictional character and builds what I consider a truly special story around him. I prefer this inspiration a thousand times over to that of a screenwriter who seeks to make money by writing a soulless script about an extremely popular character for whom he has neither passion nor sensitivity..”
It must be said that Clayface is a much less obvious choice than Superman Or Supergirl to launch a new DC film.
But the character, who first appeared in comics in 1940, has a long history in the Batman universe. Several versions have already been adapted for the screen, but this will be the first time that he will be entitled to his own feature film.
Directed by James Watkins, already behind Speak No Evilthe film will center on Matt Hagen, aka Clayface, an actor capable of modifying his appearance and taking any form. Tom Rhys Harries plays the main character.
Clayface will be released in cinemas in France on October 21, 2026.
