Louis Garrel joins Sydney Sweeney in the cast of this period film

Matthew Goode, Rose Leslie and Irene Jacob will also star in The Custom of the Country.

Adapted from Edith Wharton’s 1913 novel of the same name, the film The Custom of the Country was announced last January, with Sydney Sweeney in the lead role. Deadline we learn this week that she is joined by two French actors: Louis Garrel and Irene Jacob.

While he currently plays in Seamsalongside another American star, Angelina Jolie, Louis Garrel will soon share the stage with the actress of The Housekeeper.

Written and directed by Josie Rourke, the filmmaker of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots with Margot Robbie, The Custom of the Country tells the story of Undine Spragg, a daring young woman who wants at all costs to reach New York high society at the dawn of the 20th century.

In the casting, we will find Sydney Sweeney in the role of Undine, surrounded by Matthew Goode (Stoker), Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones), Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope), Irene Jacob and Louis Garrel. Hugh Dancy, Ian Hart, James McArdle, Rosie Sheehy, Louisa Harland, Ronkẹ Adékọluẹ́jọ́, Dominic West and Miranda Richardson complete this prestigious cast.

Writer and screenwriter Julian Fellowes, behind the hit British series Downton Abbeycited The Custom of the Country (released in France under the title Beautiful weddings) as a major source of inspiration in his creative work. Edith Wharton is also the author of the novel The Time of Innocenceadapted for the cinema by Martin Scorsese (with Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder).

In 2020, Sofia Coppola announced the development of a mini-series adapted from the novel for Apple TV. Two years later, the platform withdrew funding and in 2024 the director confirmed the cancellation of the series.

Josie Rourke is therefore the first to tackle this major project, co-produced by StudioCanal.

In the meantime, Sydney Sweeney is starring in Christine, Irene Jacob appears alongside Denis Podalydès Maigret or Dead in Lovewhile Matthew Goode stars in the series Forgotten Files broadcast on Netflix.

Synopsis: “Undine Spragg is a fiercely ambitious woman from the Midwest, determined to climb the heights of turn-of-the-20th-century New York society.”

The filming date of The Custom of the Country has not yet been revealed.
