Next Star Wars movie will be helmed by Spider-Man director
After having been a hit with Spider-Man and creating the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew series on Disney Plus, Jon Watts will take the helm of the new opus which should continue the Skywalker saga.
The director of the trilogy Spider-Man with Tom Holland is about to move from Marvel to a galaxy far, far away.
A new movie Star Wars is currently in development with Jon Watts directing.
The filmmaker is best known for directing the Weaver’s first three adventures in the MCU: Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017, Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019 and Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021 (Destin Daniel Cretton took back control of Spider-Man: Brand New Day).
Watts already knows the universe very well Star Wars. He co-created the series 2024 Skeleton Crew starring Christopher Ford, a coming-of-age adventure set in the era of the New Republic. Jude Law played Jod Na Nawood, alongside young Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kyriana Kratter and Robert Timothy Smith.
In 2024, he also concluded a first look agreement with Disney, via his company Freshman Year and producer Dianne McGunigle, for feature films.
He will therefore succeed George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Richard Marquand, JJ Abrams or Rian Johnson.
On the screenplay, we will find Simon Kinberg, screenwriter, producer and director notably associated with the saga X-Men.
Jon Watts will indeed direct the first film of the famous new trilogy Star Wars written by Simon Kinberg, who should continue the Skywalker saga after The Rise of Skywalkerin 2019. The film could thus become Episode X of the saga.
The project directed by Watts currently has no title or release date announced.
While waiting to see that, the intergalactic saga will continue to take its side steps: after The Mandalorian & Grogu this year, Ryan Gosling will wear Star Wars: Starfighter in spring 2027 at the cinema.
