Prime Video officially orders a RoboCop reboot

Almost 40 years after the cult film, RoboCop returns in the form of a series for the streaming platform.

A new legend of 80’s cinema will return to the streaming service.

In the pipeline since the takeover of MGM by Amazon in 2022, the RoboCop update is now officially launched.

Prime Video has ordered a series which will have 8 episodes and which will take RoboCop from the start. A total reboot to resurrect one of the most emblematic franchises of science fiction cinema, almost forty years after the cult film directed by Paul Verhoeven.

The official synopsis remains faithful to the original concept: “A gigantic technology conglomerate convinces a city to integrate an ultra-powerful robot into its police force… a robot in which the consciousness of a fallen police officer has been implanted.”

Writing and serving as showrunner, we find Peter Ocko, supported by James Wan, who will produce the series via Blumhouse Atomic Monster. The original film’s creators, Michael Miner and Ed Neumeier, will also serve as executive producers on the project. For James Wan, the goal is not to simply remake the 1987 film.

“I’ve been a lifelong fan of RoboCop. What Paul Verhoeven created in 1987 was decades ahead of its time. The questions he asked about technology, identity and the power of big corporations are even more relevant today. With Peter Ocko’s vision, we want to pay homage to what made RoboCop iconic while offering something completely new.”

Same enthusiasm from Amazon MGM Studios which sees in RoboCop “a franchise which has spoken to the public for almost forty years. It is not only a great action film: it is also a powerful reflection on our relationship with technology and power.”

Created in 1987, RoboCop starred Peter Weller as police officer Alex Murphy, resurrected as a cyborg responsible for maintaining order in Detroit. The film will give rise to two sequels, as well as a movie reboot (already forgotten) with Joel Kinnaman in 2014, several television series, cartoons, video games and comics.
