Quentin Tarantino’s play reveals its title and story

The Popinjay Cavalier will be a costume work set in 1830s Europe.

We know a little more about Quentin Tarantino’s first play.

True to his style, the filmmaker will not do things by halves.

The director of pulp Fiction (1994) and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) is indeed preparing a show for London’s West End. His piece will be titled The Popinjay Cavalier and is described as a “swashbuckling comedy”, in other words an adventure comedy full of panache, inspired by the great swashbuckling stories of theater and cinema.

Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, the play is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment.

So what will it be about?

The action will take place in Europe in the 1830s and promises “a turbulent comedy of deceptions and disguises”, in the spirit of the great adventure epics.

The project is currently in development and is aiming for a premiere in early 2027 in the West End, although the theater which will host it has not yet been announced. The cast, artistic team and precise performance dates have yet to be revealed.

Quentin Tarantino revealed that he was working on this piece during a panel at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, even suggesting that it could become his famous tenth and final film.

“If you’re wondering what I’m doing right now, I’m writing a play, and that will probably be the next thing I do. If it’s a flop, I probably won’t make it into a movie. But if it’s a huge success… it might become my last movie…”

We do not yet know if The Popinjay Cavalier will be QT’s 10th and final feature film, but in the meantime he has written the script for the sequel to Once upon a Time in Hollywood : The Adventures of Cliff Boothwhich will see Brad Pitt reprise his Oscar-winning role under the direction of David Fincher for Netflix.
