Schwarzenegger will shoot King Conan in 2027, and it will be his “Ruthless”
“Next year we’re going to do King Conan. Now it’s real and I’m very excited…”
After decades of contradictory announcements, King Conan finally seems ready to ascend the throne.
According to Arnold Schwarzenegger, the project will begin filming in 2027.
The actor enjoyed the 44th birthday of Conan the Barbarian to confirm this Hollywood sea serpent. Better yet: Schwarzy directly compares the film to the great western Ruthless by Clint Eastwood (1992):
“Next year we’re going to do King Conan. Now it’s real and I’m very excited“, explains Schwarzenegger to the specialized site TheArnoldFans. “For ten years, I have been saying that we should make King Conan with a great script, someone who really understands Robert E. Howard and the visual universe of Frank Frazetta.”
The project would also bring together a very big name behind the camera: Christopher McQuarrie, screenwriter of the last four Mission: Impossiblewas reportedly hired to write and direct the film. Information relayed by Schwarzenegger himself during a recent event in Columbus, Ohio.
Producer Fredrik Malmberg, of Conan Properties International, even confirms that an agreement has been reached between the company, Arnold Schwarzenegger and 20th Century Fox.
At 78 years old, the former governor of California believes he is finally at the right age to play this aging version of the warrior.
“The film wouldn’t have worked right after the first Conan, because the idea of King Conan is that he has reigned for forty years. He’s older now. He is no longer in the form of his great years and some are seeking to overthrow him…“
And this is where the comparison with Ruthless becomes interesting: “He is a king, he has become a little complacent. He is tired of this life and wants to move on. Watch the Clint Eastwood movie, Merciless. It will be very close to that… but with extraordinary battles.”
Schwarzenegger also assures that he is already preparing physically for the role. The actor explains that he continues to train twice a day, between weight training and cardio, in order to regain the energy of Conan from the 80s.
“Age means nothing to me. I feel like thirty years ago.”
Released in 1982, Conan the Barbarian by John Milius remains one of Schwarzenegger’s most iconic roles and one of the great classics of warrior fantasy in cinema.
