The cast of The Wild Robot has a piece of advice for the public: “Bring tissues!”
The next animated film from DreamWorks Studios promises to be full of emotion.
If you thought you had cried enough in front of many tearjerker Disney movies like Up There, Toy Story 3 or even Wall-Eis that you have not seen yet The Wild Robot. Latest production from DreamWorks studios and directed by Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, Dragons) returned behind a drawing table eleven years later The Croodsthis animated film has just been presented at the Toronto Festival. The first feedback is unanimous: this emotional adventure will make more than one person cry.
Even the original voices could not resist the flood of tears. Asked by Variety, Lupita Nyong’o, who dubs the main character, Roz, in English, confessed to having been moved during the screening:
“I only saw it once, but it was ultimately heartwarming. And that kind of crying is worth it.”
She is not the only one. Oscar-nominated for her role in Everything Everwhere All At Once, Stephanie Hsuwho lends his voice to a character revealed towards the end of the film – whose mystery is left hanging – took the opportunity to give the public some advice: “Get some tissues and some gummy bears.” Something to warm the hearts and console between two tears.
Chris Sanders – The Wild Robot: “Dreamworks is the best place to do animation”
Inspired by Peter Brown’s children’s graphic novel, The Wild Robot features Roz, a high-tech assistance robot, stranded, alone, on an island, far from any form of civilization. To survive, she adapts and begins to imitate her new environment as well as the behavior of the animals that live there. Programmed to help anyone, she shows herself to be willing despite the reluctance of the different species who consider her a monster. By chance, she comes across a baby goose, without a family, and takes him under her wing. Thanks to him, she discovers her reason for being, and a part of herself that she did not suspect existed: a heart. Her mission will be to help him be ready for the next migration, although it will not be as easy as it seems…
The trailer released a few months ago suggests an imminent conflict between his new home and his place of creation, between technology and nature, where union will make the difference.
Positioning itself as a coming-of-age story, this film addresses themes related to home, friendship, but also family and more specifically parenting. Roz discovers that there is no real manual or programming for this. She learns like a mother discovers through experiences how to raise her child, considers Lupita Nyong’o:
“The journey that Roz takes, like that of a robot who finds herself with the responsibility of a mother, highlights the principle that every parent is doing this for the first time.”
For Mark Hamill who doubles Thorn, one of the many animals that live on the island:
“Parents will have as good a time as the children. It’s rare to be able to achieve this ideal.”
“It’s sublime”: Why The Savage Robot reminded Mark Hamill of the Star Wars adventure
Let the spectators be reassured, The Wild Robot also includes light moments where the robot’s naivety in the face of the wild and its encounter with the different characters – like this mischievous and tender fox dubbed by Pedro Pascal – are the subject of jokes.
Poetic with its pictorial and creative illustrations, Roz can hope to make a place for itself in the Pantheon of animated robots where the one from Castle in the Sky or even The Iron GiantIts release is scheduled in France on October 9.
