We know the colossal budget of Avatar: Of Fire and Ashes

James Cameron did not skimp on means, this time again…

Sums that are disproportionate to the phenomenon.

Avatar is the biggest success in cinema history. Because James Cameron has never been one to play small arms.

A few days before its theatrical release, on December 17, Avatar: Of Fire and Ashes reveals its budget… and, unsurprisingly, it’s colossal.

According to Variety20th Century Studios (and therefore its owner Disney) would have allocated more than $400 million to the third part of the saga. A figure which places the film in the financial continuity ofAvatar: The Way of Waterwhose budget range already oscillated between $350 and $460 million.

Filmed at the same time as the second opus (principal photography was completed in December 2020), Avatar: Of Fire and Ashes brings together the core of the franchise: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Edie Falco and many others

In a recent interview with Discussing Filmshe confides that these amounts are far from being passed like a letter in the post. Especially when he announced to Disney that he was going to make two sequels instead of one!

Cameron reveals that the original script forAvatar: The Way of Water was split into two: The Way of Water and therefore Of Fire and Ashes. Not everyone at Disney applauded the idea: “I had a lot of resistance from the studio,” says Cameron, who reminded executives how profitable the saga has been: ‘Wait a minute. What part of the concept’have another chance to win $2 billion‘problem, exactly?’

In fact, the franchise has been a gold mine for 20th Century Studios and more broadly for the Disney group.

Avatarthe first film, released in 2009, cost approximately $237 million to produce (nearly $400 million once marketing is included) for a worldwide box office of $2.92 billion, generating an estimated net profit of $1.2 billion.

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) was even higher in spending: a budget of $350 to $460 million, and a total cost approaching 1.1 billion once promotion was added. Despite this excess, Disney made more than $530 million in net profit, thanks to worldwide revenues of $2.32 billion and the power of the franchise in video, streaming and long-term exploitation.

With Avatar: Of Fire and Ashes beyond the $400 million budget, Cameron hopes to do it again…
