We know who will be the new RoboCop for Prime Video
Nearly 40 years after Paul Verhoeven’s cult film, RoboCop will return in the form of a Prime Video series. And it’s the Legion actor who has just landed the role of Alex Murphy.
The new RoboCop now has a face.
Dan Stevens will play Alex Murphy and his mechanical alter ego in Prime Video’s future live-action series, taking over from Peter Weller, who played the police officer turned cyborg in the original 1987 film – and Joel Kinnaman, hero of the 2014 remake.
The casting comes a month after the official green light given by Amazon MGM Studios to this new adaptation, in development for almost two years. The British actor quickly established himself as the favorite for the role and himself confirmed the news on Instagram with an enigmatic publication accompanied by the cult phrase: “Dead or alive, you’re coming with me.”
Dan Stevens made his name in Downton Abbey and then playing the mutant Legion in Noah Hawley’s brilliant X-Men spin-off series. He then appeared in the makeup of The Beast opposite Belle Emma Watson in Disney’s live-action remake. And more recently, we saw him in the Godzilla saga in the cinema.
This new version of RoboCop will be made up of eight episodes and developed by Peter Ocko, who serves as showrunner and screenwriter, with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster producing.
The story will once again follow a large technology group which teams up with the local police to develop an agent capable of fighting crime.
The official synopsis remains faithful to the original concept: “A gigantic technology conglomerate convinces a city to integrate an ultra-powerful robot into its police force… a robot in which the consciousness of a fallen police officer has been implanted.”
Prime Video thus intends to revisit the themes of Paul Verhoeven’s film, while offering a contemporary version of the RoboCop story.
