WILD HORSE NINE ★★★★☆

By Martin McDonagh

The essentials

In 1973, two CIA agents (John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell) go on vacation to Easter Island… Martin McDonagh questions America’s guilty conscience in a succulent black comedy.

The new film from the director of Good kisses from Bruges stars Chris (John Malkovichin an unexpected comeback to the fore), a CIA agent who plots in 1973 Chile, working to bring down the newly elected socialist president Salvador Allende, in order to establish Pinochet’s military dictatorship. Ill and dying, Chris decides to spend a few days off on Easter Island with his partner in crime Lee (Sam Rockwell), loving to tell of his great feats of arms and his top secret operations to all those who cross his path. And through this irresistible black comedy, Martin McDonagh metaphorizes the agony of America, the fascist cancer that has been eating away at it ever since.
